Biography
Leo Espinosa, an artist and graphic designer from Colombia, began his career in 1987 as a mild-mannered art director in advertising, while occasionally moonlighting as a comic book artist.
In 1992, Espinosa and a group of illustrators and entrepreneurs launched ACME, Colombia's first and most renowned comic anthology to date. In that same year, his interest in the combination of illustration and design became his focus, and he honed his skills by attending a summer workshop with Milton Glaser at The School of Visual Arts in New York. The program was very intense and completely changed Espinosa's perception of his life and career.
In 1993, Espinosa moved to New York, and began working as a designer for a small studio, and later as a freelance illustrator. Since then, his editorial illustrations have regularly appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Wired, The Boston Globe, and Time Magazine.
Ten years of editorial work opened the door to other types of projects, including product and character design. In 2003, Espinosa designed two watches for Swatch, one of which later became the centerpiece of the company’s international advertising campaign. Based on that success, Espinosa joined forces with his wife, Laura, to launch Studio Espinosa, a resource for art, design, and creative development driven by Espinosa's signature "neocomic" style.
