About the current exhibition:
Raul Gonzalez of the Miracle Five presents a series of work capturing the life of a Mexican boxing legend, El Chango Verde (El CV). Chingasos explores how professional boxing served as one of the many activities that provided people of immigrant status with a means of negotiating new urban identities through popular culture. People of Mexican descent,in particular, made boxing into a performance based expression of self in the context of a restrained public sphere with little tolerance for the communication of cultural identity and “Mexican-ness.”
Boxing has offered immigrant communities in the United States one of several means of achieving status in an environment which otherwise aims to subjugate them.
Chingasos attempts to highlight some of the experiences of Mexican immigrants and their strugglesfor adaptation.
